842 Man Ordination
842 Man Ordination
Witness the simultaneous ordination of hundreds of deacons in the early 1950s, a rare and now-prohibited practice that these photos are the only record of.
In recent years photos have resurfaced of the simultaneous ordination of 842 different seminarians to the priesthood. During the 35th International Eucharistic Congress of 1952 in the Olympic Stadium of Montjuich 21 different altars were erected where 21 different high profile bishops from around the world celebrated a phenomenon known as sychronized masses. At the 12th altar the Ordinary of the Diocese of Barcelona, His Excellency, Archbishop Mondrego Casáus, offered his mass with microphones that were projected throughout the stadium for all to hear. At his altar, like all the rest, he ordained roughly 40 young men to the service of the priesthood of Jesus Christ. Worthy of note is that this practice of synchronized masses was prohibited by the Vatican only a few years later.
